If you get nervous when thinking about dental appointments, or you haven’t been to the dentist in years due to your anxiety over the appointment, you’re definitely not alone. Millions of people have dental-related anxiety, and it’s nothing to be ashamed of if you do.

The good news is that our team here at Simpson Dental Associates in Charleston, West Virginia, offers a service that’ll help you relax and enjoy your time with Dr. Mark Simpson so that you can get the dental care you need. It’s called sedation dentistry.

What is it?

Sedation dentistry is exactly what it sounds like – using sedatives during dental procedures to help you relax and enjoy your time in the chair. This is already fairly common with laughing gas, but that doesn’t work for everyone who has severe dental anxiety.
There are generally four levels of sedation – mild, moderate, high, and unconscious sedation. Mild and moderate sedation are great to help you relax for procedures such as a cleaning or a filling.

High and unconscious sedation are used for in-depth procedures such as dental implants or root canals. Both of these are heavy enough sedations that you’ll need someone to drive you home after the appointment.
