Gum disease is referred to by dentists as periodontal disease. The link between your oral health and your overall health has become more apparent with recent advances in science. People are starting to understand the importance of taking care of their oral health to reduce the risk of heart disease, stroke, diabetes and even some types of cancer. Also, gum disease is the leading cause of tooth loss.
Sometimes gum disease can go unnoticed due to the fact that generally it is not uncomfortable. It is a common myth that it is normal for gums to bleed when they are brushed and flossed. This is not true. If there is any bleeding it means there is a disease process occurring and it should be addressed. It is important to keep up with your regular dental appointment and not wait until something bothers you to get it treated. An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure.
If you have gum disease, we at Simpson Dental Associates are prepared to treat it. We have developed a protocol that gives us optimal results. We start by doing a bacterial test to determine the type of bacterium that is present. This aids us in the selection of an antibiotic which will be most effective in helping us deal with that bacteria. Of the 600 species of bacteria some are more destructive than others and it is important to determine which bacteria are disrupting the balance of the normal flora in the mouth. Once we select the antibiotic we utilize a CO2 soft tissue laser to sterilize the diseased areas and promote new tissue growth. A Piezo electric scaler helps to remove bacteria and their associated deposits. We have found, using this treatment we are able to see great results and usually we are able to avoid surgery.
