That’s right, the days of surgery for the most common of periodontal or gum disease treatment may be coming to an end. The trend appears to be toward non surgical therapy.  Advancements in treatment of gum disease have reduced the need for gum surgery, according to Dr. Mark Simpson of Simpson Dental Associates. “The periodontal program that we initiated in our office in 2000 is giving our patients phenomenal results.  Periodontal disease is primarily caused by bacterial plaque, a sticky, colorless film that constantly forms on teeth.  Controlling these bacteria is the primary objective of gum treatment.  Other factors such as bite, tobacco use, genetics, stress and certain medications can contribute to the progression of the disease.” Dr. Mark and Christen Simpson’s periodontal treatment differs from traditional therapy in that they incorporate bacterial testing to identify the offending bacteria.  Once the bacterium is identified, it is tested to see what antibiotic most effectively eliminates it.  Root planing...

Meet our Doctors

Mark W. Simpson D.D.S. graduated from the University of Dayton with honors. He received his D.D.S. degree from West Virginia University School of Dentistry. His continued drive and quest for excellence has resulted in him being selected as American's Top Dentist every year since 2002. Dr. Mark Simpson is recognized by his colleagues as a leader in dentistry. He gives frequent lectures both nationally and internationally on topics covering implants, cosmetics and practice management. Dr. Mark also provides on-site training classes at Simpson Dental Associates to dentists from around the U.S. He is widely recognized as being one of the country's most talented dentists. Dr. Mark utilizes the most advanced and latest technologies available in dentistry to provide each patient with the utmost level of care.

 

Dr. Mark and his wife have one son and one daughter. He enjoys water and snow skiing, ice skating, boating, racing cars and collecting model trains in his spare time.

Christen K. Simpson D.D.S., M.B.A. received her Bachelor of Arts in Biology and her D.D.S. degree from West Virginia University. She decided to further her career with an M.B.A. from the University of Charleston. Dr. Christen strives to remain on the forefront of dentistry and keeps abreast of all of the newest technologies available. Dr. Christen is very compassionate, caring and is well known for her gentle touch and personalized approach she provides each of her patients.

 

Dr. Christen is an active member of the community. She is involved in the American Cancer Society, Charleston Area Alliances' Generation Charleston, Junior League of Charleston and serves on the board of the American Heart Association. Dr. Christen is proud to be the third generation of Simpson dentists carrying on the tradition of generations of smiles.
